Cacti lovers rejoice; I've found our Mecca!
After building up somewhat of a plant obsession recently, I have been keeping my eyes peeled to discover the very best places to go to admire, photograph and purchase my little green friends. A quick browse of the Haarkon site always fills me with inspiration, and a scroll through her glasshouses images helped me to discover Abbey Brook, a sixty-year-old cacti nursery nestled in the south of the Peak District.
I roped in a friend with similar passions for road trips, photography and cacti, and we spent our Saturday driving through the winding roads of the Peaks on our way to the nursery, situated close to Matlock.
I've visited small cacti nurseries before, but never anything on this scale! There are three greenhouses completely filled with beautiful and interesting cacti and succulents, including one where you can purchase your own little green friends to take home with you (prices start from £1.50 for tiny newly-propagated pals).
We spent a couple of hours slowly wandering through the plants, taking photographs and admiring the shapes and colours. The owner, Brian, then helped us to select a few plants each (I stopped myself at five!), and supplied us with a few helpful hints and tips for re-potting and keeping them alive.
